Ancient Greece

All of the evidence from ancient Greece indicates that ancient Greeks conceived of the gods as extraordinarily more powerful than humans, in every way. As one character in the Iliad puts it, “Gods are to humans what humans are to creeping bugs” (5.477-78). Mortals and gods, then, occupied the opposite poles of the spectrum of power.
