Find a Quote you Love

Step 1; FIND A QUOTE YOU LOVE. This whole assignment is going to be based around this quote. It could be a famous quote, or an obscure one. It could be something you and your friends always say, or something a parent always used to tell you. It could be long or short. (Must be school appropriate!)

Step 2; Collect images/text that help support that quote. These will be used to create your quote collage. Make sure they are as high resolution as possible! Find something you can SCAN, too!

Step 3; Create a NEW document in Photoshop that is Sin x 10in. (portrait/tall) or 10in x 8in (landscape/ wide) at 200 resolution (dpi). ALL of your layers should be dragged onto this canvas!

Step 4: The beauty of these Photoshop techniques is that YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR MIND! (you can al-ways undo as long as you use layer masks! So experiment with different arrangements of your images/ text until you create something awesome. Yes. It most be awesome.

Minimum Requirements:

  • E8″x10″ or 10″x8″ @ 200 resolution
  • One background image that covers whole page & gives a subtle texture, but is not a main subject (like fabric, clouds/ sky, something industrial, rocks, grass, etc)
  • Use of Layer Masks
  • Use of Blending Modes
  • Use of Layer Styles & Filters
  • Minimum of 8 (eight) layers
  • Sense of UNITY— Images rein-force/ support/relate to quote
  • Smooth blending of layers into one complete design
  • Overall Creativity, Composition, Craftsmanship, Critique

Reflection Critique Questions:

Analyze your finished collage based upon the following categories: USE COMPLETE SENTENCES FOR EACH PROMPT. (5pts each)

  1. CREATIVITY—your selection of your quote, the choice of imagery you have included… what have you done to make your quote collage unique? Were you successful? What could you improve about the creativity expressed by this piece?
  2. COMPOSITION—the arrangement of the elements of your collage… how well you combined the images and the text. Does the collage feel complete? Does your eye travel through the image, or is it only focused on one spot? What about your composition is successful, what could be improved?
  3. CRAFTSMANSHIP—the care with which you took in creating your piece. Is the font readable? Skilled use of the tools and techniques you have learned in Photoshop. Smooth blending where appropriate; clean edges where appropriate. What about your craftsmanship is successful in this piece? What could be improved?
