Directions
For this assignment, you will select from one of the following scenarios and construct an appropriate communication. You will be asked to analyze the situation provided, articulate the goal you wish to accomplish through this communication, and determine the related purpose. From there, you will create the actual communication. The final communication should be at least 250 words.
Option #1: Career Situation—Change to Employee Handbook
Your organization is considering rewriting position descriptions and related employee handbooks. You are tasked with informing the employees and asking them for their ideas relative to both efforts. Choose a particular type of communication (email, memo, etc.), and then craft the message. As part of your communication, locate one scholarly source from the Virtual Library that offers advice on effective strategies to communicate such as a change to an employee’s handbook. Share information from this source as part of your communication.
Option #2: Life Situation—Product/Service at a Local Children’s Museum
You are a member of an advisory board for a local children’s museum. You have an idea for a new product/service that will increase the number of yearly subscriptions/memberships and increase overall day to day gate traffic. Choose a type of communication (email, memo, etc.), and then craft the message. As part of your communication, locate one scholarly source from the Virtual Library that offers ideas on effective services and/or programming for children ages Pre-K to Grade 8. Share ideas from this source as part of your communication.
Option #3: Academic Situation—Research Study Tied to Degree Program
You recently completed a unique research study on a topic related to your program of study. The instructor would like you to share these findings with your student peers as well as other faculty members in the department. Choose a type of communication (oral; presentation, poster presentation, text-based publication, etc.), and then craft the message. As part of your communication, locate one scholarly source from the Virtual Library that offers effective strategies to communicate controversial/new ideas to experts in a particular field.
- At the end of your communication, write a short reflection paragraph of at least 150 words about how you used these ideas to inform your choice of communication type. Provide a description of your intended audience and how this particular audience influenced the communication approach you took and the way in which you composed the communication. Discuss the ways in which you met the desired goals of your communication as well.
