DAY 1: Ex 27 Endocrine System

  1. Define “ hormone.”
  2. What characteristic defines a target organ, or target cell type, for a particular hormone?
  3. If all hormones travel in the blood stream, why don’t all tissues respond to all hormones?
  4. Name 10 different endocrine glands or endocrine tissues in the body, and their hormones:
  1. Fill in the Chart (In your own words):

Anterior Pituitary (adenohypophysis) Hormones

HormonesRegulation of ReleaseTarget Organ and Effects
Growth Hormone (GH)
Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH)
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
Prolactin (PRL)

The Posterior Pituitary is not an endocrine gland in that it acts as a storage area for two hormones transported to it via the axons of neurons of the hypothalamus. The hormones are released in response to nerve impulses from these neurons.

  1. What are the two hormones of the posterior pituitary? A. __________________; B. ___________________
  2. When is each released?
  3. Name their target organs and their effects on the body.
  4. Define diabetes insipidus, and report the clinical presentations.
  5. What are the functions of Thyroid Hormone (TH)?
  6. Name the homeostatic imbalances of thyroid hormone, and list the effects.
    1. Hyposecretion ____________________, ______________________
    1. Effects:
  • Hypersecretion _____________________
    • Effects:
  1. Melatonin is produced in what gland?  What is its function?
  2. What is the main hormone produced by the Parathyroid gland?  _________________________

Mechanism of action:

  • __________________________________________________________________
  • __________________________________________________________________
  • __________________________________________________________________
  1. What are the two main hormones produced by the pancreas?

Hormone 1: ____________________What stimulates its release? ________________________________

What are its functions/effects?

Hormone 2: ____________________

  • What stimulates its release? __________________________
    • What are its functions?
  1. What are the main mineralocorticoids and glucocorticoids? Name the origin and regulation of each – what stimulates their release and maintains their levels?

Mineralocorticoids

Main hormone: _____________________

Origin: _________________________

Stimulus: __________________________

Functions:

Glucocorticoids

Main hormone: ______________________

Origin: _________________________

Stimulus: __________________________

Functions:

  1. The gonads are responsible for estrogen and testosterone release and production. What is the effects of these hormones on the body?
  2. What is the stimulus for their release?
