A significant community problem

by | Mar 16, 2021 | College (1-2), Criminal Law, Research Paper

Your group will write a research paper about your social issue’s undesirable social conditions and where popular culture brings awareness to the social issue. You will find credible organizations and publications online and in the library that address your social issue. You will also find relevant cultural artifacts to use in this paper.

Plagiarism:

You MUST cite your sources. Failure to do so is plagiarism. All suspected cases of plagiarism will be reported to the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution for review.

Requirement:

You will write a 6-10-page-group research paper that discusses a significant community problem (social issue) and identifies where in popular culture you see the social issue being addressed. Use these three questions as guiding prompts for your paper:

  • What are the three undesirable social conditions associated with your social issue? Explore each in detail by identifying why each condition is considered undesirable. (Why is each a problem in that community?)
  • Is popular culture ethically (ethos) presenting the pieces of evidence (logos) associated with your social issue?
  • How is popular culture using emotions (pathos) to address your social issue?

Research component:

Your group will select a social issue by identifying a group of people who find a problem with something based on their morals, values, and/or social order. Once you have a social issue and it’s effected community, your group will identify the reasons why the social issue is a problem within a group of people or a community. Your group will combine similar reasons together to create three broad categories, called “undesirable social conditions.” This research component calls for you to explore how undesirable social conditions affect the community. [Refer to your social Issues notes]

Popular culture component:

In researching your undesirable social conditions, consider the places in popular culture where you find your social issue being addressed. Is it in movies, television shows, music, books, etc.? This component calls for you to discuss/analyze if popular culture is ethically (ethos) presenting the pieces of evidence (logos) associated with your social issue and how popular culture is using emotions (pathos) to address your social issue. Keep in mind that popular culture can bring a positive awareness or a negative awareness. You’ll want to discuss what is present and what is not present in the cultural artifact.

Format: Your paper must be in APA style. Visit Purdue’s Online Writing Lab (OWL) for assistance with in-text and reference page citations. The format of your paper is worth 10% of your overall grade. https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/general_format.html

Sources: Your paper must cite at least four credible sources/authorities within the field. Acceptable sources include: articles (scholarly journals, magazines, newspapers), government documents, credible non-profit organizations (must be a .org), educational sites (must be a .edu), or government sites(must be .gov). Wikipedia may NOT be used. You may use a .com only if it is a primary source and the source is credible(News sites are sometimes considered primary sources, but oftentimes they are considered secondary and not always reliable). Check with your instructor, peer leader, or librarian for help with primary sources.

Guidelines: Your research paper must be typed using Times New Roman (or equivalent), 12pt size font. It must be at least six(6) full pages in length, but no more than ten(10). Your paper must have one-inch margins and it must be double-spaced. It must be consistent in APA formatting. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in a loss of 10 points (one letter grade). Be sure to ask for help if you need it. Review guidelines in the syllabus.

Submission file formats: I can read .docx, .doc, .PDF, and .rtf extensions. I do not have a Mac and cannot read .pages files. Please convert your file to one of the other listed file types.
