This Portfolio Project is worth 10% of your overall grade.

Deliverable items for the Portfolio Project will be required at different points during the course. Details for each submission are included below in the Deliverable Descriptions.

Scenario

As a healthcare professional you have been asked to create a patient brochure related to the an endocrine system disorder or pharmaceutical agent and present your brochure to the other healthcare professionals in the office for approval. The purpose of the brochure is to educate patients about a disorder or drug by providing accurate information about the manifestations, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of a disorder OR the medical use, mechanism of action and side effects of a medication. The brochure should be professional and accurate and suitable for a medical office waiting room. Through completion of this assignment, you will demonstrate knowledge of biology and chemistry as it pertains to human body structure, function, and homeostasis. In addition, you will use current technology and resources to locate and evaluate information and communicate findings in visual, written and oral formats.

Directions

1. Select an endocrine disorder or pharmaceutical from the list provided by your instructor and have the selection approved by your instructor.

2. Choose three credible resources to research your chosen topic, one of which may be your textbook. Send to your instructor for feedback.

3. Perform research for either the endocrine disorder or the pharmaceutical including answering questions listed in module instructions. Submit to instructor for feedback.

4. Based on your research and feedback from instructor create an attractive tri-fold (single page, two-sided) brochure with graphics and/or images to share the information.

5. Present and explain your topic to the class in a presentation either in person or uploaded to Blackboard with voiceover (per your instructor) lasting 3-5 minutes.

6. Comment on two of your peers’ presentations.

7. Complete a reflection per module instructions.

Deliverable Descriptions

Module 2: Topic Selection

• Due per tracking calendar • Choose from the list of disorders or pharmaceuticals for instructor approval.

Module 3: Reference Selection

  • Due per tracking calendar
  • Select at least three (3) references that will be used to research your topic. Ensure answers to all questions can be found within your reputable resources. References should be formatted in APA format. Submit to instructor approval.

Module 5: Research Questions

  • Due per tracking calendar.
  • Research the following questions and paraphrase information related to your chosen topic: Submit to instructor for feedback.
    • Endocrine disorder:
      • What hormone(s) is/are out of homeostasis and what causes the disorder?
      • What causes the signs and symptoms of the disorder?
      • How is the disorder diagnosed?
      • How is the disorder treated?
      • What is the prognosis for the disorder?
      • Can the disorder be prevented? If so, how?
      • Is there notable historical information about the disorder?
    • o Endocrine medication:
      • For what is the drug used medically?
      • How does the medication impact the chemistry of the body and homeostasis?
      • How is the drug administered?
      • How is the drug manufactured?
      • How is the history of the drug and how was it discovered?
      • What possible side effects may result from taking drug?
      • Is there notable historical information about the drug?

Module 6: Rough Draft of Brochure

  • Due per tracking calendar
  • Incorporate instructor feedback on research questions and create a rough draft of the trifold brochure for peer review. The brochure should contain the following:
    • List the author’s name, course and topic title
    • Contain the information above presented in a clear, easy to follow and read format (font size at least 10 point)
    • Contain pictures or graphics as appropriate (with informal citations).
    • Use professional language with no spelling or grammatical errors
    • Provide a list of “works cited” in APA format

Module 7: Project Presentation

  • Due per tracking calendar.
  • Incorporate feedback from instructor to present a final product. Present the brochure and information to classmates either in person or via Blackboard (with voiceover) per instructor. If presenting via Blackboard with voiceover please upload your product to discussion board for peer review. If presenting in person please follow instructor directions. o Student’s voice should be clear and easy to understand
    • Student should vary his/her tone of voice and use pauses effectively to place emphasis on important points o Student should provide additional insight to brochure in his/her own words. Student should not read verbatim from the brochure.
    • Student should avoid non-words (“Um,” “Uh,” “You Know”) and practice using professional language and proper pronunciation.
    • Eye contact with audience and proper posture should be maintained.
    • Student should adhere to the 3-5 minute time limit.
  • Respond to two of your peers’ presentations o Using the portfolio project grading rubric as a guide
  • Provide objective feedback on the brochure design, writing mechanics, spelling or grammatical issues as well as the resources used.
  • Provide pertinent feedback on the ease of understanding information provided in the brochure for a potential patient.
  • Provide feedback on thoroughness of the content of brochure.
  • Provide feedback on the presentation of the brochure.

Module 8: Final Submission to ePortfolio

  • Due per tracking calendar
  • Upload your Portfolio Project to the Program Outcome in your ePortfolio listed below. Use the following naming convention: BI0110 — Portfolio Project: “Program Outcome”:

Module 8: Reflection

  • Due per tracking calendar
  • For the final piece of your Portfolio Project, you will reflect upon the course and how it directly relates to your future workplace in the form of a Word document 1-2 pages in length in APA format.

For this reflection: a) Analyze the importance of this project to your future career. b) In your own words reflect on how this project meets the Program and Institutional outcomes as stated on the first page.
