Explain what the study of educational psychology entails. 1b). Outline key contributions from the following historical figures in the field: William James, John Dewey and E.L. Thorndike. 1c.) Why are Mamie and Edward Clarke considered key contributors to the understanding of educational psychology?

2a). Explain how teaching is both an art and science. In your opinion, which is more important for effective teaching – teaching being an art or teaching being a science? Why? 2b). Explain three qualities of an effective teacher. Do you think you possess these qualities? If so, why? If not, why not?

3a). The three basic research methods used in educational psychology are descriptive, correlational and experimental. Identify key components of each research method. 3b). What is the difference between program evaluation research versus action research? Which do you think is more difficult to conduct? Why?

4a). Explain how development occurs from a biological, cognitive and socioemotional perspective. 4b). Explain the following developmental issues: nature versus nurture; epigenetic; continuity versus discontinuity and early versus later experiences.

5a). Identify and explain Piaget’s stages of cognitive development. 5b). How do Piaget and Vygotsky overlap and how are their theories different?

6a). Explain the following concepts related to language: phonology; morphology; syntax and semantics. 6b). How can parents and teachers enhance language and reading skills? Be specific. 6c). Explain how language matures during adolescence and what signifies this maturation?

7a). Explain Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory – be sure to identify each system. Provide an example from your own life to explain each system. 7b). Erikson outlines eight conflicts that occur during his psychosocial stages of development. Identify the stage you are currently in and explain the conflict as described by Erikson. Then discuss whether you agree with key issues during this stage.

8a). Diana Baumrind identified four parenting styles. Identify and explain each style and discuss which style/s you were raised with. Do you think the style you were raised with impacted your development? Why or why not? 8b). Identify and explain the five peer statuses. Which status did you belong to in school? Do you think this status impacted your school environment? 8c). What are the three concerns that your text highlights for U.S. High School education?

9a). Explain each identity status: identity diffusion; identity foreclosure; identity moratorium and identity achievement. Provide an example from your own life or someone you know to highlight each status. 9b). What is ethnic identity?
