Purpose
William Faulkner once wrote that “the past is never dead. It’s not even past.” We see this sentiment in this unit more than any other we’ve had this semester. Globalization or the interconnectedness of economies, cultures, and peoples of the world is hardly a recent phenomenon. However, since the 1970s, a few key trends in globalization such as the spread of information technology and concern for the environment, have become particularly important. While these trends began in the twenty century, they have grown in influence during the early decades of the twenty-first century. We do not know the future, although they will likely remain highly relevant issues for much of the world in the coming decades.
Task
In your opinion, what are the key environmental problems facing humanity today? Please avoid generic answers like “climate change”, and instead focus on specific examples such as pollution, overfishing, deforestation, etc. If “climate change” is used, provide sufficient data to back up a definition and case study/historical examples.
