Using one of the following short stories: “Popular Mechanics”, “Happy Endings”, “The Story of an Hour”, “The Yellow Wallpaper” or “Dagon” write a well-developed literary analysis essay that addresses one of the following prompts. You do NOT have to answer all the questions in the prompt you choose; the prompt is to give you ideas to help you develop an argument about your particular short story.
Analyze how relationships are portrayed in your short story.
In the short story how does the author portray relationships (friendships, marriage, family) in the short story? How does the presence or absence of a certain relationship affect a character(s), in their actions and in their relationships? What does it require of people and what does it offer in return?
What is the theme of the short story? In your introduction, state the theme of the short story. In your thesis, explain how the theme is developed. In your body paragraphs, give specific examples of scenes from the short story in which the author developed the theme.
Consider the gender of the characters in your short story. How are male and female characters portrayed? How does the work portray their roles in society? How does gender influence the choices that are available to the characters and the decisions that they make? Write a paper that explores how gender affects the plot and character development.
