Notre Dame in Paris

by | Feb 22, 2022 | History

Many of the Gothic cathedrals were dedicated to the Virgin Mary – hence, many cathedrals and churches are called “Notre Dame” which means “Our Lady.” The huge Gothic cathedral in Paris -however, is simply known as “Notre Dame.” In the centuries following the Medieval period, Notre Dame barely survived the French Revolution as it was seen as a symbol of the king’s power. In the late 1800’s, Victor Hugo celebrated the building in his novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
