COMPETENCIES
1026.1.5 : Describe effects of economic, political and social factors. The learner describes how economic, political, and social factors affect communities.

INTRODUCTION

In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, American laws and social life segregated Native Americans, Japanese Americans, and African Americans. American society and government policies like Jim Crow laws, identified certain people, often those with less power in society, as different and kept them apart or separate using the law, geography, violence, or other methods to enforce and perpetuate that segregation. The unique experiences of each segregated community illustrated how segregation transformed those communities and the United States. Now segregation is widely regarded as a major injustice in American history that has lasting effects in the present.

In this assessment, you will analyze the economic, political, and social impacts of segregation on different communities. Segregation (the act of separating, often through oppressive means, communities based on factors like race) has taken different forms in US history including reservations, internment camps, and Jim Crow laws. You will consider how discriminatory laws have affected Native Americans, Japanese Americans, and African Americans. Your response should capture the diverse and complex consequences of segregation among these three groups.
