Each theory that we discuss and practice applying will prepare each student for the composition of a one-page (maximum) MLA-style paper (with a works cited page). Each paper will propose a theory-based critical analysis of a different music video selected by the writer. This study of theory will lead each student to the development of a more multifaceted analysis for a final 4-page (minimum) MLA-style paper (with a works cited page), in which each writer will support a central thesis with evidence derived through the theory-based analysis of one or more music videos that the writer has not yet considered in any of his or her one-page papers. When conducting this analysis, writers must use at least three of the theories discussed in the course.
In the pursuit of understanding these theories and improving as writers, we will engage in a number of casual discussions and in-class activities. Writers will each have an opportunity to record these in-class activities along with a daily free-writing entry in a notebook of their choice, due when we meet during finals week . A complete and on-time notebook will earn each writer 20 points.
Considering the above information, we can review the possible points for the course as follows:
Paper 1, due before the end of Friday, Week One — 10 points
Paragraph 1 explain the theory of the video
Paragraph 2 explain the analysis
Paragraph 3 put it altogether for a one page paper.
